MatboardCalc  is a free calculator created by math-phobic photographer Ken Schuster. It determines the size mat board (which is also your frame size) that you will need for a given image size, and it gives you measurements for where to cut the opening "window" in the board. Microsoft Excel (or possibly similar software) is required. It works with inches in decimals and fractions, or both, as well as metric.

It's only 25 kb and downloads in a few seconds.

Instructions
  • Measure the size of the image that you want to be visible in the window opening and enter that in MatboardCalc.
  • Measure the size of your mat board and enter that in MatboardCalc.
  • Determine the size of the borders you want around the window opening and enter that in MatboardCalc.

As you try different combinations of image, border and mat board sizes,  MatboardCalc will update the  measurements of where to cut the window.
